One of the primary ways that informatics has changed nursing practice is through documentation. Health informatics is also an important part of care coordination in nursing. The ability to track staffing, workflow and communication can help nurses to identify areas where current processes can be improved.
Over a decade ago when I started my nursing career in the Emergency department we were still using paper charting, within several years of being in my career we converted to electronic charting and therefore began a new journey into EMR or electronic medical record. I currently work in the pre-op and PACU setting and we use nursing informatics in many ways. All patient tests, lab results, diagnostic studies, vital signs, doctor and nursing notes, ect are all located within the electronic medical chart. The hospital system I work for currently also has a system called Mychart that also allows our patients to access their own electronic medical record to view their own results. This is a prime example of the nurse and patient diving into healthcare informatics.
